What I would tell a first year student

Don’t do it for the degree, for the degree alone is worth close to nothing. Don’t do it because of peer pressure, for it will be painful. Do it because you want to.

Work in teams. Don’t just split the work, work together. This is the one skill you will always need.

Much of the hard facts you learn in school will be obsolete by the time you finish. So, don’t learn facts, learn principles.

Minimize the exam preparation time. Passing an exam is a short term goal. You should focus on the long term.

Don’t wait to be invited to ask questions. And don’t limit your questions to "what?", "when?", and "where?". These only uncover facts. Start with "how?", and pursue the "why?" as much as possible.

Universities tend to be serious. Too serious. But, you don’t have to. Play.

Don’t just read. Do. Put in practice. Get your hands dirty. Experience.

No topic is truly difficult. But, many of them are badly presented.

What you make of what is around you, is always up to you.
